Movies and media are such a strong force in our lives. Every once in a while a movie creeps up on us at the right time like it was serendipity to see it on that day. Now of course we all have our guilty pleasures and maybe some of those movies provided a pivotal moment in our lives.
4. Persepolis
This movie is a recent addition to my list of the legendary. All I could think of at the end of this movie is "I couldn't have said it, drawn it, illustrated it any better myself." This movie enlightened me on the "je ne sais quoi" of my life. "I'm not alone and I haven't been for so long". That sense of duality I referenced in regards to Paprika is also expressed here. The dichotomy of two cultures diverging into one human being. Although this isn't a verbatim depiction of my life and my struggle, it still sneezes all over the Arab Spring and current events in the Middle East.
This is my sacred list of movies that in some way changed or inspired me:
1. Amelie
Could it be the red and green color scheme that's laced throughout the entire movie, or just the fact that I felt it depicted a true human being and pure emotions. The soundtrack is genius and perfectly portrays the small idiosyncratic nature of the film. It was composed by Yann Tiersen.
2. Paprika
Although this movie qualifies as a psychological thriller, to me it shares a similar theme to Amelie. Not only does Paprika don a similar hairstyle to Audrey Tautou she exudes a similar sense of mystery and cunning whimsy. This movie came to me at a hard time in my life - it helped me stay true to myself. The duality portrayed between the free spirited self and the contained self is an inner struggle many can identify with. Everyone has a personal truth - find it and believe in it.
Susumu Hirasawa created the soundtrack for this movie - it also has one of the most beautiful opening sequences I have ever seen in any movie.
3. The Moulin Rouge
Can you can can can? No! I cannot but my goodness, I had never been dazzled by costume design like I have been with this movie. The reference to pop culture in the music is so outstandingly done. The love story is of epic measures. I could only wish Nicole Kidman truly loved Ewan McGregor in reality but it is just a movie. Baz Luhrmann you are a wizard and the soundtrack is a given - MAGICAL.

5. Tron : Legacy
What?! THE?!! I know what you're thinking - "How did you end up with this movie out of all the others you just mentioned?" To me this movie was an experience. All the other movies stimulated me philosophically politically, and in a very fantastical yet humanistic way. This movie, called to all my senses, visual, sound, feeling, mental, you name it. I know some may argue the story line was very basic and in many ways had many allusions to God, religion, and the plight of a father and son relationship. IT DOES touch upon all those things. Come on people - you should have guessed already:
DAFT PUNK BABY!! The music and the visuals were not just married, they were married soul mates. I felt the atmosphere of the air in this movie when I saw it in theaters. The music took the steering wheel and drove me through every scene. I loved it, I loved it! I LOVE IT STILL!!
I want to see this at the cinerama. I mean seriously re-release it or something!
I would love to add to this, you didn't hate the bad guy, you couldn't hate the bad guy and this movie fulfills my attempt at accepting imperfection as perfection.
It's not a favorite of many, it's not an award winning story line, BUT MY GOD WHY DIDN'T DAFT PUNK GET A GRAMMY FOR THIS? (fuck you Skrillex)
To conclude this long entry, I have to admit that this isn't my entire list - nor is it in any specific order. I don't have a favorite ice cream.
Here's a cover of the Grid and Son of Flynn theme in Tron Legacy - why? because it's good. Listen to it!!!
